Wilma Mikesell

Wilma Mikesell passed away today in Oregon City, Oregon.  She was surrounded by her family as she gave up on a long and painful struggle following her surgery.  Despite the fact that the cancer was gone, she could not recover her strength and made the decision this morning to not allow further support for her breathing.  She was born on July 24, 1927 and lived a successful and productive life as a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend.  She was a handmaiden for the Lord in her own way, and called on the elders of the Church for love and support during the last few months. She will be remembered at a memorial service this week at the Community of Christ, Woodburn, Oregon congregation.  She was very thankful for all the prayers by family and friends.  Her  daughter, Jaime Musgrove.

SILICON PINES

Leslie - I thought that I would share this with you - kind of a cute story.

SILICON PINES

THE TOUGHEST DECISION:
SHOULD MY LOVED ONE BE PLACED IN AN ASSISTED COMPUTING
FACILITY?

For family members, it is often the most difficult and
painful decision they will face: to accept that a
loved one - a parent, a spouse or perhaps a sibling -
is technologically impaired and should no longer be
allowed to live independently, or come near a computer
or electronic device without direct supervision. The
time has come to place that loved one into the care of
an Assisted Computing Facility. But you have
questions... so many questions. We at Silicon Pines
want to help.

WHAT EXACTLY IS AN "ASSISTED COMPUTING FACILITY?"

Sometimes referred to as "Homes for the
Technologically Infirm" "Technical Invalid Care
Centers," or "Homes for the Technically Challenged,"
Assisted Computing Facilities (ACFs) are modeled on
assisted living facilities, and provide a safe,
structured residential environment for those unable to
handle even the most common, everyday multi-tasks.
Most fully accredited ACFs, like Silicon Pines, are an
oasis of hope and encouragement that allow residents
to lead productive, technologically relevant lives
without the fear and anxiety associated with actually
having to understand or execute the technologies themselves.

WHO SHOULD BE IN AN ACF?

Sadly, technology is advancing at such a dramatic rate
that many millions, of all ages, will never truly be
able to understand it, putting an undue burden on
those friends and family members who must explain it
to them. But unless the loved one is suffering from a
truly debilitating affliction, such as
Reinstallzheimers, the decision to commit is entirely personal.

You must ask yourself:

*How frustrated am I that my parent/sibling/spouse is
unable to open an e-mail attachment?"

*How much of my time should be taken up explaining the
difference between 'save' and 'save as'?"

*How many times can I bear to hear my dad say, 'Hey,
can I replace the motherboard with a  fatherboard? Ha ha ha!"

To make things easier, we have prepared a list of
Warning Signs, which we encourage you to return often,
or, if you can't figure out how to bookmark it, print out.

Also, please take a moment to read "I'm Glad I'm in
Here! - A Resident's Story."

MUST IT BE FAMILY, OR CAN I PLACE ANYONE IN AN ACF?

Several corporations have sought permission to have
certain employees, or at times entire sales
departments, committed to ACFs. At present, however,
only direct family or self-internment can commit
individuals. The reason is simple: there are not
nearly enough ACFs in the world to accommodate all the
technologically challenged. For example, there are
currently only 860,000 beds available in ACFs, but
there are 29 million AOL users.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

ACF rents range from free up to $12,500 per month. The
disparity is currently a point of contention in the
ACF industry. Many residents are covered through
government programs such as Compuaid or Compucare, but
reimbursement rates are low and only cover a portion
of the fees.

Exacerbating the situation are the HMOs (HelpDesk
Maintenance Organizations), which often deny coverage,
forcing residents to pay out of pocket or turn to
expensive private techcare insurers such as
BlueCache/BlueScreen.

Offsetting the costs are technology companies
themselves, many of which subsidize ACFs. Firms such
as Microsoft, Dell, Qualcomm, and America Online will
pay up to 100 percent of a resident's monthly bill,
but there is a catch. ISPs, for instance, require
residents to sign service contracts lasting a year or
more. Microsoft, meanwhile, prohibits the installation
of any competitive software, while Priceline requires
that residents buy shares of its stock, which seems
onerous but saves residents on lavatory tissue.

HOW OLD MUST I BE TO HAVE SOMEONE COMMITTED?

Until very recently, you had to be 18 or older to
legally commit a family member. However, the now
famous local court case Frazzle vs. Frazzle and
Frazzle has cleared the way for minors to commit their parents.

In that case, 15-year-old Josh Frazzle of Topeka had
his 39-year-old parents committed to an ACF in Kansas
City after a judge ruled Drub and Mitzi Frazzle were a
"danger to themselves and the community." According to
court records, Josh told his parents about the "I Love
You" virus and warned them not to click attachments,
then the next day his parents received an "I Love You"
e-mail and clicked on the attachment
because, they explained, "it came from someone we knew."

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN AN ACF?

First, make sure it's a genuine Assisted Computing
Facility, and not an Assisted Living Facility. To tell
the difference, observe the residents. If they look
rather old and tend to openly discuss bowel movements,
this is probably "assisted living." On the other hand,
if they vary in age and say things like, "I'm supposed
to figure that out? I'm not Bill Gates you know!,
" this is probably "assisted computing."

Also, at a well-run ACF, residents should lead full,
independent lives, and should be allowed the use of
many technology devices, including telephones,
electric toothbrushes, and alarm clocks.

However, only a facility's Licensed Techcare
Professionals (LTPs) should perform computational or
technological tasks such as installing programs or
saving e-mail attachments. And LTPs should NEVER
answer residents' questions because studies have shown
that answering user questions inevitably makes things
worse. Instead, residents should simply have things
done for them, relieving them of the pressure to
"learn" or "improve."

CAN A RESIDENT EVER GET OUT?
No.

OK, THIS SOUNDS PROMISING. HOW CAN I LEARN MORE?

For your enlightenment, we offer extensive information
on Silicon Pines and the ACF lifestyle, which can be
found by clicking one of the links in the navigation
bars found at both the top and bottom of this page.

But whatever you decide, keep in mind that due to
demand, ACFs now have long waiting lists. WebTV & AOL
users alone will take years to absorb.

HANG ON, msn is updating us again, soon.

Family, we are going through some changes on these webpages soon.  Go to the top of our "What's New" page and click on "new features" to read about some of the
changes msn is going to make. We will no longer be "communities" but will be "groups". That means some of the links to "communities" may not work until we can change them to "groups". Please stay with us if our website experiences some difficulties during these changes.  I will make no major changes to our pages until we see how we can adjust .  Then we will add some interesting new pages and photos of our upcoming Allen/Mikesell family reunion picnic later this summer.  Boyd & I just got back from the Mikesell family reunion in Idaho.  If my photos turn out I'll add them to our photo albums here later. I'm still hoping someone will add some photos of Darlene & Carlos's 50th wedding anniversary.  I believe our "message board" will not be affected by msn's changes so please, let's hear from you.  Come visit me on our Front Porch or just let us know what you're all up to.  Hope to hear from you soon.  Have a great Summer.

Visitors here for Allen's anniversary

Hi family,
We've been busy on the old farm with yardwork lately.  Took time out to have a lovely time at Darlene & Carlos Allen's 50th wedding anniversary celebration and visit with Lynn & LaRaine and Thelma & Wayne who were here the same week. Everyone looked so good!  Hope someone posts some photos of the events on "Family Fun", lots of camera's were there.

We're off to the Mikesell family reunion near Rigby Idaho this week-end.  I'll be adding new pages to "Family Fun" when I get back so check these web pages this summer. I'm still hoping some of our members will add to our photo albums, message board, the "Front Porch" or even add their own pages.  Add to our Prayer list thread on the message board if you know someone who needs our prayers.  Please keep Wilma Mikesell & Betty & Evan Erlandson in your thoughts and prayers. We've just learned that Kenneth Dean has had medical problems and we hope he gets well soon.
Hope to hear from all of you soon.  Leslie

It's May again

Just a note to let you know we're all still here but have been busy.  Betty is out at West Lake Hospital now and is doing much better, Thank God.  Darlene and Carlos will be in Spokane by May 19th for their 50th Anniversary.  LaRaineand Lynn and some of the Allens kids will be up here to celebrate too.  Thelma and Wayne will be up for a visit around the same time, so you can see we're all thrilled to be able to see everyone.  Jim Erlandson was here with his Dad for a few days again and he and Evan even went golfing which was wonderful for Evan to get to do. Please add your prayers to ours for Wilma as it is a rough time for her, also a little mail might help her too.  Well I'll  scoot along for now and get back to you another time.  love to you all,  Della Ann

Us old timers remember Burma-Shave road signs.  If you're too young to remember or so old you've forgotten, just make one up.  Please add only one per message, but you can add a message whenever you think of another one.  Let's see how long we can make this thread.  Here's one of my favorites:

Front Porch

2009:

Below is a message board thread that we used in 2002-2004. Please don't add to it

anymore. Please reply to another of our messages or make a new one by going to the

bottom of our Home page, to our "Blog/Message Board" box, or use the "+ Post" button

at the top of our pages. Thanks,   Leslie

2002:

Hi Family, please relive our visits on our front porch.  I copied your replies to our "Front Porch"

page, and deleted them here.  Go to the bottom of our Home page for a link to our  Front

Porch conversations, or click here.

We had short tidbits of conversation just as if you were actually sitting on our front porch.  We enjoyed ourselves, sitting there rocking back & forth, drinking our coffee , waiting for the others to join us.

[Also go to the bottom of this thread for some comments that didn't get onto "Our Front Porch", sorry.]

Welcome Jaime

Welcome new member Jaime.  We look forward to your input.  If you'd
like you could place a link to Jared and Rachel's webpage on on "Our Web
Sites" link page or e-mail it to me & I'll add it.  We'd love to see it, I can't believe how they've grown. Your many talents are being passed on to your children.
It's bitter sweet to hear all the great things your family is doing and then to hear
that your mom is ill.  Our hearts are saddened but we know she's a strong person
and will win her battle.  Of course our thoughts and prayers will be with her.
God bless,    Leslie

family update

I have meant to join the website for a long time.  I have checked from time to time and really enjoy it.  To update you, I am still living in Oregon City, Jared is now a sophomore at Graceland University, majoring in English Lit. and secondary education.  He has a strong interest in drama also, and a music scholarship.  He sings in the concert choir and really loves school.  Rachel is 11 and in the fifth grade.  She loves to play the piano,  play basketball, write stories and poems and is treasurer of her school.  Terry is still producing videos for the county.  He and Rachel have a webpage with some of their artwork and photos.  I am the assoc. director of nursing at Oregon State Hospital by trade, and the pianist at church and avid gardener  amongst other things for fun.  I would love to hear from family members. Thanks again for a great web page.

Welcome New Member

Welcome to new member Vernie!  Vernie is connected to our Allen family through

the Winegar family. Our Conrad Allen's half brother Lewis Rial Allen married Lois

Emeline Winegar. The Winegars were Utah pioneers like our Allens.

Some new pages are on our "Family Fun".  Take a look.  More pages to be added

soon. We need our members to be more active and add to our pages, photos albums

[pictures] and message board or we will lose our website. My brain is getting stressed

trying to keep our pages interesting. I need help, new ideas and new members.

Evan, who was on our prayer list is up and cruising again. He is the sole caretaker

of his wife Betty, so prayers for them are still appreciated. If you know of anyone

who needs our prayers please leave a message on the prayer thread on our

Message Board.

We wish all our family a HAPPY EASTER.  Spring will soon be here!  Happy Birthday

to those born in March.   Best Wishes to you all,   Leslie

What's new on "Family Fun".

Hi family,

what's new on our "Family Fun" web pages?

Links to our genealogy websites: ALLEN; MIKESELL; BINDER ; ERLANDSON; WOOD and a link to

Leslie Mikesell Wood's family genealogy index.

From that page you can go to all our family web pages. If you have a family web page please let me know so that it can be listed on my index.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lesliewood/

2001 Allen/Mikesell reunion picnic photos taken by
Sheryl Wood Emerick are now in our photo albums.

When you have your photos developed, ask for them to be placed on a disk so that they can be added to our photo albums easily.  I'm still scanning our old photos to add. Evidently no one in our families have used their cameras for any special occasions because very few photos have been added to our albums lately.

Amy went to Asia & Ginny to Poland. Read all about it. We're hoping they will add their photos.

We have added a prayer list thread to our message boards. We now know that most everyone in our families are well and happy because I've been the only one leaving messages for prayers. Even if you don't need prayers, please let us know how your doing, with a new message.

We have over 20 pages listed in our menu now and will soon be adding more. Give a look. Please join & participate, by adding photos, messages, recipes, pages, etc. When you join I make you an assistant manager so that you can add to our pages. We've had our family funweb pages for 1 year now, I'd hate to lose it for lack of participation. We want to welcome any new members and give a big THANK YOU to those of you who gaveme items for our pages. Check our "What's New"
page for February. It's changed every month.

Happy Groundhog Day! Love,
Leslie

Mae Luscher passed away Jan 2, 2002

Just wanted to let any of the family know that my mom passed away. She had recently relocated to a nursing home in New Denver, B.C. - north of Trail. She was walking down the hall of the nursing home and had a stroke that took her instantly. She has left many fond memories behind her and will be sadly missed.
