Now on to my Great, Great, Great Grandfather. His name is Rial Allen, the 3rd child of Samuel and Nancy Easter Allen. Margaret was between 6 and 7 years his senior. This was not too unusual an occurrence after a great war like the Revolution when marriageable men were not very plentiful, so many women took husbands much younger than themselves. Rial was 15 when he married Margaret on October 21, 1806. In 1808, he bought a place about two miles west of his father's place. There on a hillside he built one of the most pretentious homes of that period. It was so far away from the water that it was decided it would have to be moved down near the river bed. When they moved it, they sawed off the corners of the house so that the witches would not molest them because of the new location. It was a home made of great logs with a window on each side of the fireplace which was the style at that period. It was here their 7 children were born.
Like his father, Rial was a farmer and breeder of beautiful thoroughbred horses. He was well off financially. His wife died in 1843 and when his children made up their minds to go to Missouri as pioneers to that state he sold his home and went with them. He settled in Savannah, Andrew County, Missouri and again none surpassed him in raising high grade cattle and horses. These were his delight, and up to the time of his death in 1865, he possessed the finest stock in his vicinity.
Four of his children had embraced the gospel of Latter-day Saints. It was a source3 of much grief to him that they would desire to go farther west and pioneer and unknown wast when there were such prosperous farms in Missouri. His youngest son Andrew Jackson Allen went with the pioneers to Utah in 1847. Rial offered him $600. if he would return to St. Joseph, Missouri. He did not return. On May 30, 1862 two more of his sons, James and Lewis started on their journey west to join the Saints. He also offered them $600.00 to return to Missouri to live near him but they also chose to remain in the west. At that time $600.00 was a lot of money.
In 1862 he built a fine new home for his daughter and her husband, who were childless, and he lived with them until his death in 1865. He had been a widower for twenty-two years. Rial Allen was not a big man, but stood very straight. He was of medium weight, not very heavy, of medium complexion and was getting grey in 1862. He had blue eyes, was of a kindly disposition, and gentle in his ways. Of his sons, James was most like him in build and disposition.

Now that brings me to my Great, Great Grandfather, James Allen. He was the oldest son of Rial and Margaret Evins Allen. James grew up nine miles out of Somerset, Kentucky. He fell in love with his cousin Nancy McDaniel Allen, daughter of his father's brother John and Rachael McDaniel Allen of the same place. She was born in 1809. The parents of both were very concerned about this marriage and in every way tried to dissuade them, but they were determined to wed, and finally the parents gave their consent so they were married January 20, 1831 and moved to Waitsboro, Calloway County, Kentucky. This is a station on the Columbia River and is situated on the Cumberland Pass. It is very beautiful country, the mountains of which are covered with a dense folliage. In the summer wild Honey-suckle vines cover the hills so thick that the perfume is wafted through the breeze all along the highways.
James and Nancy had 8 children, 3 girls and 5 boys. All of the children except Samuel Jackson Allen were born at Waitsboro, Callaway County, Kentucky. Samuel was born at Far West, Missouri. James and his family belonged to the Baptist church. The LDS Elders had taken the gospel to James and his brother Andrew Jackson Allen in 1835. James and Andrew went to Illinois to see the Prophet Josep Smith. A terrible gloom was over the city as the Prophet had been killed and the people were in mourning. They were very disappointed they were never to see him.
James settled in Savannah, Andrew County, Missouri until he was in a financial position to make the trip west. In May 1862 James and Lewis and their families started west. They were happy in the thought they would see their brother Andrew Jackson Allen, whom they had not seen in fifteen years. They had one horse team with them. Lewis had three covered wagons driven by oxen. James had two covered wagons with oxen and a buggy with a span of horses. They had other horses and these were used to drive the cattle. There were about fifteen head of milk cows, two young colts, almost old enough to wean, and provisions for the trip.
The weather was wonderful. When they came to the Mississippi River, they ferried across, they also had their oxen taken to the other side, but the horses and cattle had to swim. They saw antelope quite often but only one large herd of buffalo which they were in hopes of killing one, but were unsuccessful. They traveled weeks before they saw an indian. He was on a horse and came up to them. He wore a large feather in his head piece. He tried to talk to them but it was impossible to understand him. From that time on they saw many Indians. Squaws carrying their babies came up and begged from them. When they arrived at Ft. Laramie, they were able to purchase a quantity of buffalo meat, called dried venison. When they got to colorado, they were met by Francis Marion Allen, James and Nancy's son, who had been working in a mine at Pike's Peak. He joined his family and proceeded west with them.
On the 6th of September 1862 they arrived at their brother, Andrew Jackson Allen's home where they spent the winter. The following spring they settled in Cache Valley where he farmed and raised his family. Cache Valley was so named because on the long trips from Salt Lake to Idaho and the North, they head to have some place to cache provisions that they could replenish their supplies on these long trips. Here they cached supplies out of reach of the Indians and travellers and the valley became known as Cache Valley. Here and through Idaho are a great number of James Allen's descendants.

Hugh and Rebecca McDonald/McDaniel
2nd great-grandparents of Conrad Allen. Hugh was listed as McDonald when he joined the Revolution, Rebecca said McDonald on her pension application. In the census records of Pulaski Co., Kentucky, they mostly used McDaniel.]
After our ancestor Hugh McDonald/McDaniel died, 24 Sept. 1828 at Pulaski County Kentucky, his widow Rebecca applied for and was given a small pension for his service in the war of the America Revolution against the British.
Out of these pension records comes a tale of courage, love and devotion that should make their descendants very proud.
Rebecca McDonald then 80 years old, her daughter Rebecca Cain and Samuel Knox age 88, all gave depositions. From them this story emerges:
Hugh & Samuel served together for 15 months. Hugh as an orderly Sgt., was in the battle of Sullivan's Island, also marched from there over the mountains to a battle with the Indians. Knox called Hugh "a fine patriot".
After this 1775/6 enlistment, Rebecca & Hugh were married 22 Sept.1778 in Fairfield District, South Carolina. Shortly after their marriage, Hugh went out as a volunteer on foot with Capt. Nelson's company and was out for several weeks. Then after just one year of marriage, Hugh volunteered again and served as a dragoon or light horseman. while marching toward Camden his regiment was in a skirmish with the British.
During the American retreat, Hugh & part of the company were captured and made prisoners of war. In Camden they were thrown into prison where they lay for about six weeks with the smallpox. Hugh and some other prisoners were then taken down to Charleston and put on board the "infamous" British prison ships.
After being attacked by a fever, the sick men were sent on shore to the barracks where young Rebecca came to nurse her husband. After a few weeks he recovered Hugh was again sent back to the prison ships. Even then Rebecca stayed with her husband on the odious ship until they were taken to old Jamestown Virginia. There they were landed and Hugh was freed in a prisoner exchange.
They were 500 miles from home and Hugh was not yet fully recovered from what was called "ship fever". He was not in good health for several months. The exchange took place in August but the couple did not reach home until the next 10th of May.
What trials they must have suffered together! Hugh was never paid for the loss of his horse and equipment. Near the end of her life, Rebecca received his small pension of $90 per annum to commence March 1831. In 1841 the government in arrears finally sent her $945 plus $45 for her semi-annual allowance.
In Hugh McDonald's will he left "my loving wife Rebecca" all his property until her death.
Children mentioned were Annie Mills; Jane Terpin; Rebecca McDonald; Rachel Allen; Hugh McDonald; Nancy Harris; Andrew McDonald; Martha Kissee and Peggy Roberts.
John Allen was executor. By 1835 an Indenture involving Hugh's land and signed by his children, has their name changed to "McDaniel". Census records of Pulaski Co. Kentucky mostly spelled the name "McDaniel". One reason names often changed spelling in those days was that so many people could not read or write. [end]

WILL OF HUGH McDONALD 5 Apr 1827
In the name of God Amen, know ye that I, Hugh McDonald of Pulaski Co & State of Kentucky, being of lawful age and possessing sound mind and recollection and for these knowing the mutability of all earthly things proper do make publish and ordain this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all other wills by me heretofore made. In the first place I hereby give unto my Loving Wife- Rebecca McDonald, all the property of which I may be possessed at my decease the real and personal of every description [after] the payment of my debts has taken place which are but a few. As soon after her decease as convenient [it] is my will and wish that my property be divided in the following manner, I hereby give or rather confirm a former gift unto Annie Mills- my oldest dau, of $63 which she took or retained of some money coming to me in South Carolina where she lives.
I hereby give unto Jane Terpin, wf of George Kinder Terpin the sum of $1.00, 12 mos. after the decease of my wife. I hereby give & bequeath unto my ygst dau- Rebecca McDonald, two beds with bedding & bed & a cow & calf, the articles to be chosen by herself from amongst my property & my wife's saddle over & above her equal share of the balance to which my wife die possessed. Third are the children that are to have an equal divided of my property, viz:
Rachel Allen, Hugh McDonald, Nancy Harris, Andrew McDonald, Bathth-[Martha?] Kissee, Peggy Roberts, and the above named Rebecca McDonald which property after my youngest dau has taken her extra part over & above the rest of these 6 persons is to be sold on a credit of 12 mos & the proceeds equally divided amongst them. It is my will & wish that there be no order for the appraisement of my estate until after the death of my wife.
I hereby appoint John Allen, executor of this my last will & testament with full power to transact the business and to make titles to every species of property herein named and bequeathed & In Testimony whereof I have hereunto put my hand & seal this 5th day of April A.D. 1827 Hugh McDonald

This indenture of bargain, sale and conveyance made and entered into 24 Oct 1835 between John Allen and Rachael his wf, Ephraim Cain and Rebecca his wf, Dabney Harris and Nancy his wf, George H. Turpin and Jane his wf, Thomas Kizzee and Martha his wf, John Roberts and Margaret his wf, John Mills and Ann his wf, Andrew McDaniel, Hugh McDaniel, heirs and legal representatives of Hugh McDaniel, decd by T. Quarles a commissioner of the Pulaski Circuit Ct, apptd for the purpose of the first part and James Short, assignee of Levi Cooper of the 2nd part, witness, that, whereas by a decree of the Pulaski Circuit Court, pronounced at this present term, Oct 1835, in a suit in chancery pending in said court.
Wherein James Short appear in complainant and the heirs and representatives before named of the said Hugh McDaniel, decd, were directed and ordered by said decree to convey to the complainant the tract of land in the bill mentioned' according to certain boundaries therein specified by deed of conveyance with a clause of special warranty and the said heirs and representatives of Hugh McDaniel, decd, having failed to make and execute the conveyance as directed and required by the said decree, the said T. Quarles has been apptd the commissioner of said court to make and execute the conveyance as directed and required by the said decree to the complainant for and in behalf of the said defendants subject to the approval of said court.
Now, therefore, in consideration of the premises and pursuant to said decree, the heirs at law and legal representatives before named of Hugh McDaniel decd by the said T. Quarles commissioner aforesaid, has granted, bargained, and sold and by these presents grants, bargains, sells, aliens and covenants of the premises and pursuant to said decree, the heirs at law and legal representatives before named of Hugh McDaniel, decd by the said T. Quarles, commissioner as aforesaid, has granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents grants, bargains, sells, aliens and conveys unto the said James Short, all that tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the county of Pulaski & State of Ky on the waters of Coldweather creek, containing 41 acres and bounded as follows:
beginning on a conditional line on Coldweather next to John McCallkister's at a sugartree and poplar, thence south west along said line to a black oak thence no west to a beech at the corner of Zachariah Roy's field, thence no to Coldweather creek, thence down the creek to a sugartree thence no to a buckeye thence so east to the beginning. It being the same tract of land which Hugh McDaniel, decd, obligated himself by bond to convey to Levi Cooper and which obligation was assigned to Samuel Cabbell by said Cooper and by said Cabbell assigned to the complainant and is the same referred to and alluded to the bill of the complainant and decreed to be conveyed by the Pulaski Circuit Ct at the present term.
To have and to hold the said tract of land with its appurtenances, according to the boundaries aforesaid unto the said James Short & his heirs forever. And the heirs at law and legal representatives before named of the said Hugh McDaniel, decd, for themselves by the said T. Quarles as commissioner aforesaid do hereby covenant to warrant and defend the said tract of land against the claim of themselves their heirs but against no other claimant whatever.
In testimony whereof the legal representatives and heirs before named of said Hugh McDaniel, decd, by the said T. Quarles as commissioner aforesaid have hereunto set their names and affixed their seals the date before named. Marriage License and Marriage Certificate, 25 Aug 1896, Union, Salt Lake County, Utah.
Witnesses were Conrad's mother, Eliza, and her husband, who Conrad thought was his father.
The 1900 U.S. census, Union, Salt Lake County Utah has Conrad Nelson and wife Annie living next to Oke G. Nelson and wife Elizabeth and their children, Matilda, Alfred, Albert, Eliza and Henry. Annie had already lost 3 children. But after meeting his Allen family, Con began using the name Allen and left and his job at the smelter to make his home in Lewiston, Cache County, Utah where he worked as a farmer with his brothers. He and Annie and their 5 children are there in the 1910 census. Then he and several of his brothers set out for Dubois Idaho to prove up homesteads. There he and Annie delivered and buried their 12th child, Johnie, who only lived a few days. Annie developed Bright's disease (Nephritis/Kidney disease) and was bedridden for 2 years until she died on the 20th of October 1916. Annie had lived only 39 yrs. 5 mo. & 10 days. She was buried at Dubois next to her baby. Their oldest child, Florence, was 15 and the youngest child, Nettie, was just 3.
Conrad’s mother whom the children called Grandma Nelson, would often come for a long visit to help with the family. Florence remembered that she always carried her bag of remedies, ready to dose the children for spring fever, coughs, etc. Grace’s small bladder always caused trouble, so before leaving the house, grandma would say in her Danish accent, “Graaaace, haf you peeeeed?” causing another trip to the outhouse. Grandma Nelson was remembered as good natured and the most patient person in the world. Grace once wrote that her father “inherited a sense of humor, a great courage, self reliance and fortitude” from his mother and from his father “a thatch of beautiful red hair and physical features”.

Conrad Allen homesteaded near Dubois, Clark Co. Idaho. It was a dry farm with a two room house which eventually held eight people. It had a bedroom and a kitchen. Both rooms were large. At times the family would winter in the town of Dubois. The first few years were good but later on families lost their dry farms to the banks. The 1920 census for Kilgore Precinct has this notation at the bottom of the page: "Enumerator reports that there is no population in Jacoby Precinct. Nothing there but deserted dry farms. M.M. Bush, Inspector." But on page 192, Jacoby precinct there are: Allen, Julius (Conrad's half-brother) and family, Ada; Ceathel; Delva; Flossie; Alda; Bryant; Bill; Bert; & Carrie. Conrad and family, Carlos; Narvel; Clyde; George; Grace and Anete [Nettie] and next door where she could help with her siblings was (newly wed) oldest daughter Florence with her husband Jeff Mikesell. Conrad was afraid of losing his oldest helper but despite that and her brothers sabotaging any courting, Florence had married in 1919 with her father as a witness. Jeff had done his courting at the church dances that the family attended. Con had always brought Annie coffee in bed in the early morning. After her death he would bring Florence coffee to wake her for the busy day. After Florence married the custom continued with Jeff bringing Florence her coffee.
The census states that Conrad could read & write but Florence Allen Mikesell told her children that she and others helped him with his church work because he had so little education. He was smart enough that very few knew of his illiteracy. Clide lived with Florence & Jeff the winter of 1921-22 on top of Teton Pass, where Jeff drove a stage [yes, a stage with horses] everyday from Victor, Idaho to Jackson, Wyoming and back again the next day. Then in 1922-23 Conrad left Grace and Nettie with Florence & Jeff near Victor, where Jeff worked for a Cattleman. Con was gone for a year, never letting the family know where he went. Grace was in the 7th grade. The boys must have stayed on the farm. Soon the 320 acres that he claimed and took title to in march of 1919, was not providing a living for his family. In April 1924 a mortgage was foreclosed and the property sold at public auction for $ 2674.72 to the Union Central Life Insurance Co.
Conrad's hair was white at a young age. His daughter Grace told of an accident in the smelter where he worked and that his red hair turned pure white overnight. It could have been caused by worrying over his family. Carlos, Clide, & Narvel were great teasers. All were hard workers. All together Conrad & Annie had 12 children but only 7 lived to adulthood. Of those, George Samuel died of appendicitis soon after he married but the other 6 lived to have children & see grandchildren. Con, with help from Florence, raised his children and continued to make a living. Mormon Church activities kept them busy. When Conrad farmed near Tuttle, Idaho, Florence would come for the summer, with her baby Ernie and later Betty, to help feed the hired men or the hay crews or just to cook for the family so they could work in the fields. Later some of the family would spend time with Florence & Jeff when Jeff worked at the coal mine at Sam Idaho. Florence divided her time between her two families.Narvel married in 1925, George in 1928, Grace and Nettie in 1930, Clide in 1931 and Carlos in 1933. Clide & Narvel farmed in Bliss Idaho in later years. Grace married a rancher and lived in Gooding Idaho, after her 1st husband died. Carlos & Florence moved to Spokane County, Washington and were close all of their lives. Nettie was a hard worker and loved animals and people and everyone loved her. She lived some years in California but spent her last years in Gooding. Conrad must have been very proud of his children. They all kept in contact and visited with each other.
Con eventually settled in Gooding county but spent the last few years of his life at Idaho State Hospital in Blackfoot Idaho. His death certificate states that he was senile, but also that he had arteriosclerosis for 30 years, so perhaps his senility was caused by hardening of the arteries to the brain. Conrad died on the 19th of September 1951 in Blackfoot. He was buried at Hagerman, Idaho. Obituary

She is survived by her husband, Carlos Allen; 3 sons, Carlos Allen Jr., Ceathel and Earl Allen, all at the home; one daughter, Mrs. LaRaine Dean, Spokane; one brother, William McDowel [McDowell], and one sister, Mrs. Zola Dadis of Prineville, Ore., and 2 grandchildren; a stepmother and one stepsister.

Conrad S. Allen Last Rites Saturday
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Thompson Chapel for Conrad S. Allen, 78, who passed away at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Blackfoot [Idaho] after an illness of several weeks. The Gooding LDS church will have charge of services. Burial will be at Hagerman.
Mr. Allen was a resident of Gooding county the past 30 years. He was well known rancher at Hagerman and Bliss.
Born in Salt Lake City March 28, 1874, he was a son of Samuel and Dorothy Allen [*should be Samuel Allen and Eliza Davids].
He was educated in Sandy, Utah.
He married Annie Anderson at Salt Lake City LDS temple. She passed away in 1916.
Mr Allen farmed at St. Anthony and Dubois before coming to Gooding.
Survivors include three sons and three daughters: Narvel and Clide Allen, Bliss; Carlos Allen of Spokane, Wash.; Mrs. J. O. Mikesell of Spokane; Mrs. Clarence Wells of Gooding; Mrs. Lloyd Bulger of Marysville, Calif. There are 30 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; three brothers, James Allen of Lava Hot Springs; Julius Allen of St. Anthony; Francis Allen of Pocatello; two half brothers, Bert Nelson of Pocatello; Henry Nelson of Salt Lake City; three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Hyde of Rupert, Mrs. Eliza Allen of Pocatello, and a half sister in Salt Lake City.

"Funeral services were held at Thompson Chapel May 10 for Narvel L. Allen, Buhl, former resident of Gooding.
He died May 7 at the Twin Falls Clinic of a long illness. Final rites were in the Hagerman cemetery.
He was born April 7, 1904, at Salt Lake City, attended schools at Dubois and Bliss, where he was graduated from high school.
Mr. Allen farmed in the Bliss area for many years, and served on the Bliss District Highway Board. He later moved to Gooding, where he worked until his retirement in 1970. In 1970, he and his wife, Lillie Hopkins Allen, moved to Buhl.
He was a member of the LDS Church.
He is survived by his wife of Buhl; two sons, Dean Allen, Portland, Ore., and Gary Allen, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc.; two daughters, Mrs. Floyd (Joy May) Thomason, Fernwood, and Mrs. Benjamin (Marjory) Shepherd, Long View, Tex.; three stepsons, Dean, Gene, and Howard Hopkins, all Buhl; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Chad (Norma) Thompson, Boise, and Mrs. Dick (Karren) Dey, Jerome; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Mikesell, Spokane; Mrs. Grace Wells, Gooding, and Mrs. Anita Walston, Bliss, 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Services were under the direction of Bishop Ray Bradshaw and opening prayer was by a nephew, Allen Beall, Philipsburg, Mont. Music was by Orlo and Verna Stevens, speaker was Bob A. Rogers, and closing prayer was by Dwain Butler. The grave was dedicated by a cousin, Fred Singleton of St. Anthony, Id."

Gooding - Grace Wells, 76, of Gooding, died Thursday, March 26, in Magic Valley Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug 12, 1910, in Lewiston, Utah, she attended school in Hagerman.
She married Grady Beall June 1, 1930, and he died in 1939. She married Clarence Wells Dec. 20, 1940, in American Falls. They made their home in Gooding, where she had resided since.
Surviving are: her husband of Gooding; two sons, Allen Beall of Philipsburg, Mont., and Bill Beall of San Diego; a daughter, Dixie Wells Pfost of Boise; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Gooding LDS Church with Bishop Larry Strickland officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Demaray's Gooding Chapel Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.

Gooding - Clarence (Bud) Wells, 85 [86], of Gooding, died Tuesday April 12, 1994, at the Gooding County Memorial Hospital.
Bud was born on Oct 27, 1907, near Soldier, Idaho. He attended Gooding High School, graduating in 1927.
In December of 1940, he married Grace Allen Beall and they resided in Gooding for the remainder of their lives. Grace preceded him in death in 1989 [1987]. Bud spent most of his life doing what he loved, which was caring for livestock and supporting the local agriculture community.
Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Allen and Cornelia Beall, and Bill Beall; a daughter and son in-law, Dixie and John Miyake, 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and a multitude of friends and admirers.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Demaray's Gooding Chapel. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel. "Marguirette "Margie" (Thorp) Allen Hall - 19 July 1908 Bliss Idaho - 21 Sept. 1997 Hamilton, MT.
Margie (Marguirette) Thorp Allen Hall, 89, of Hamilton, Mont. and formerly of Gooding, died Sunday, Sept 21, 1997 in Hamilton.
Margie was born on July 19, 1908, in Bliss, the daughter of Riley B. and Eddith May Parrish Thorp. She received her schooling in Bliss. Margie married Narvel Leslie Allen, July 20, 1925. She and her husband farmed at Bliss for many years where they raised their four children, two girls and two boys.
Margie belonged to the Bliss Community Church, Ladies Aid, and Sunshine Club. For a time she was president of the Bliss P.T.A. also serving as treasurer for a short time. In 1952 they sold the farm and moved to Gooding where she worked at the T.B. Hospital for three years before quitting to go to California for 1 and 1/2 years. On returning to Gooding in 1958 she went to work at the State School for the Deaf and Blind, as a cook.
Margie loved dancing, especially square and round dancing. She was a part time caller with Myron Bliss for the Melody Squares. Margie and Narvel also taught a round dance class for awhile. In 1960 they were divorced.
On July 25, 1964, Margie married Fred Hall. She continued as a cook at the state school until retiring after 12 years in September of 1970.
Margie joined the First Christian Church in Gooding in January of 1986. Fred preceded her in death Nov. 5, 1985; her son, Leslie Dean Allen preceded her in death Nov. 20, 1987; and her grandson, Ronald David Thomason, preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1967.
Her surviving children are two daughters, Joy May Thomason and husband Floyd of Safford, Ariz., and Marjorie W. Shepherd and husband Shep of Longview, Texas; one son, Gary T. Allen and wife, Mary of Arpin, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 23 great-grand-children; seven step great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two step great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 1997, at Demaray's Gooding Chapel with Reverend Andy Morris officiating. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding. Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Demaray's Gooding Chapel, with family members greeting from 5 to 7 p.m." [photo not with obituary]

"Ruth Allen Strickling, 90, Boise and formerly Gooding, died Feb. 28, 1999 at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, Boise.She was born April 7, 1908 in Oakley, Kans.
She moved with her family to Bliss in 1913.
She attended Bliss High School and graduated from Gooding College in 1929.
She married Clide Allen May 7, 1931, in Kimberly. They farmed at Bliss where she taught school and coached girls basketball. After Mr. Allen died Dec. 10, 1965, she moved to Gooding.
She married Forrest Strickling Nov. 17, 1984 in Mesa, Ariz. They lived in Gooding. Mr. Strickling died in October 1992. She remained in Gooding until February 1997 when she moved to Boise.
She was a member of the Bliss Community Church.
She is survived by sons, Lee (Charlotte) Allen, Palmer, Alaska; Doyle (Carma) Allen, Boise; sister, Lois (Don) Dafoe, Anchorage, Alaska; six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held March 3 in Gooding with Pastor Bob Larsen officiating. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery, Gooding."

Benjamin F. "Shep" Shepherd [Husband of Marjorie Allen Shepherd, daughter of Narvel and Margie (Thorp) Allen.]
Benjamin F. "Shep" Shepherd was born July 3, 1916, in Memphis, Texas, to Benjamin F. Shepherd, Sr. and Barbara Allen Shepherd.
He joined his Maker on March 4, 2009.
Memorial service will be held at 4 p.m.on Saturday, March 7, 2009, in First Christian Church, Longview with Dr. Richard Emerson, Dr. Jim Lewis, and the Rev. David Farmer officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Rader Funeral Home, Longview. Entombment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be members of First Christian Church. Honorary pallbearers will be all members of the Cornerstone Class.
Shepherd attended Memphis High School and attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
In 1934 he became assistant manager of ladies and infants apparel at JC Penney in Oklahoma City. He moved in 1939 to Borger, Texas, to become the Department Store Manager of CR Anthony. In Borger he served as president of the Jaycees.
In 1941 he became the advertising manager for the Amarillo Times Newspaper and was elected president of the Jaycees.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 becoming a Lieutenant in the Medical Administrative Corp.
He went back to Amarillo in 1945 opening Shepherd Printing Co. where he met and married Marjorie, the love of his life, and his life long partner. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on December 24, 2008. He served as Executive Vice-President of the Texas Jaycees from 1952 to 1954 in Grand Prairie. They moved in August of 1954 to Longview with their two sons Richard and Jay Cee. Shepherd had taken on the responsibility of General Manager of the McWilliams Furniture Stores, a position he held until the stores were sold to an investor group in 1971. The Texas retail Furniture Dealers Assn. named Shep runner-up for Retailer of the Year 1970.
He was much in demand as a dinner speaker and master of ceremonies. He was a leader in every professional, fraternal, civic and religious group with which he was associated. He was an active member of Downtown Kiwinas Club for many years and served as director in Longview Chamber of Commerce and United Way for several years.
He was designated as Elder for Life at First Christian Church. He taught the Cornerstone Class for 30 years and served as a Stephen's Minister. Marjorie and Shep were avid round and square dancers. They served as Presidents of the Oil Patch Promenaders 1995-1997.
Shep was one of five persons who organized the East Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, in 1965. He was president in 1969. He retired as director after 37 years consecutive service. He was recognized as Director Emeritus September 2002. At the same event he received the "Community Champion" award from the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug abuse.
Shep was motivator for the organizing of the East Texas Chapter of Alcohol and Drug Counselors and served as president the first two years, 1970-72. He was president of the Texas Association Of Addiction Counselors 1981-83 and was the original inductee to their "Hall of Fame" in 1990. Hew was honored as "Employee of the Year 1989 by the Sabine Valley Centers. Shepherd retired in 1991 at age 75.
The International Certification Reciprocity Consortium presented Shep with The ACE award for "Outstanding, Unique, Continuous Participation and Leadership Contributions of and to the Professionalization and Standardization of Requirements for Certification of Addictions Counselors: State, Nationally and Internationally," Rapid City, South Dakota, May 1, 1992.
Shep was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ronnie J. and Don E.
He often said that his greatest mortal joy, asset and treasure was his family. He is survived by his loving wife, sons, Richard "Rick" and Anna Maria Shepherd of Longview, th Rev. Jay and Vivian Shepherd of Longview; grandchildren, Alicia and Jay Wilson of Pace, Florida, Benjamin and Jackie Shepherd of Longview, Texas, Leslie and Paul Marsh of Longview, Texas, Jamin and Lilah Shepherd of Denton, Texas, and Sarah Shepherd of Longview, Texas; great-grandchildren, Grant, Caroline, Claire Wilson, Lily Anna and Cy Shep Marsh, and Marta Gianna Shepherd; sister-in-law, Joy and spouse Floyd Thomason, of Tucson, Arizona; brother-in-law, Gary and spouse Mary Allen of Arpin, Wisconsin; nieces, Janice Turner of Lubbock, Texas, Annette Gaines of Georgetown, Texas, Sondra Johnson of White Oak, Texas, Donice Ronald, Alameda, California; nephew, Rondon Shepherd, Ft. Worth, Texas, and many treasured friends.
